Chapter Books by Kevin Henkes
Kevin Henkes is the wonderful author of our May book, Junonia. While he is a rock star among picture book readers, he has also written a number of chapter books for older readers, some of which are award winners!
The Year of Billy Miller (2013)
Seven-year-old Billy Miller starts second grade with a bump on his head and a lot of worries, but by the end of the year he has developed good relationships with his teacher, his little sister, and his parents and learned many important lessons.
Bird Lake Moon (2008)
Twelve-year-old Mitch and his mother are spending the summer with his grandparents at Bird Lake after his parents separate, and ten-year-old Spencer and his family have returned to the lake where Spencer's little brother drowned long ago, and as the boys become friends and spend time together, each of them begins to heal.
Olive's Ocean (2003)
On a summer visit to her grandmother's cottage by the ocean, twelve-year-old Martha gains perspective on the death of a classmate, on her relationship with her grandmother, on her feelings for an older boy, and on her plans to be a writer.

Agatha Award Winner
A couple of days ago I posted about the nominees and winner of the Edgar Awards (mystery awards named in honor of Edgar Allan Poe). Well,
another famous mystery writer has awards named after her which were just
announced as well. The Agatha awards
(named for the incomparable Agatha Christie) were
announced at the Malice Domestic annual conference on May 3rd. The winner for best Children's/Young Adult novel went to...Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library by Chris Grabenstein! We, here in Rhode Island, are very familiar with this book as it is a Rhode Island Children's Book Award nominee for 2015 and is also the Kids Reading Across Rhode Island book for this year! Congrats to Chris Grabenstein!

students but finds that come morning he must work with friends to solve
puzzles in order to escape.
